6-Week Summer Session I : $75

If you've ever dreamed you were onstage in an intimate nightclub, just you and a pianist, singing your heart out with confidence ... this class is for you. Cabaret Singing 101 is for singers who wish to work on stage presence and presentation, or for beginners without a lot of experience, or for dancers or actors who have not sung very much. We can't promise you a technique makeover in just six weeks, but we can help you sing from your heart with the abilities you have. You will learn such topics as: Songs to Pick, Songs to NOT Pick, It's Just a Microphone, Don't Be Boring, Make It Your Own, Be More Fabulous Than You Think You Are, In Between Songs, and more. After six classes, you will make your debut in our Singers' Showcase, an evening performance in our cabaret.

Cabaret Singing 101 is your chance to take the plunge - even if you've never sung a solo in your life. Our classes are small and safe, and cabaret instructor Sarah Motes Ashley takes you from baby steps to your big debut with humor, expertise, and compassion.

Singing / performance experience, music-reading are helpful but not necessary.

Cabaret Singing instructor Sarah Motes Ashley has sung and performed professionally for 30 years in theatres, cabarets, nightclubs and bars in DC, Virginia, and the Midwest. She learned her hardest and best lessons in the cabarets of Chicago, where she sang as a soloist and with her three-girl group The Blondes. She learned more about interpretation, technique, and performance at the fabulous freak show known as "open mic" than she ever did in graduate school. Sarah is a gifted songwriter and storyteller, and loves to teach cabaret because "cabaret is who you are in between songs, and who you are is the only thing that matters." She is a passionate advocate for everyone's right to sing and to enjoy singing, and she believes that singing is not a spectator sport or a competitive pursuit.

Sarah received her bachelors' degree in English and theatre from James Madison University, and later (much, much later) went back to school for her masters' degree in vocal and choral music from Concordia University Chicago. She sings, writes, arranges, dances, and coaches singers all over East Tennessee, and lives with her family in Maryville. For more information see www.sarahmotesashley.com.
